Spool pin snapped off Singer 5805 - machine useable?

Postby redw4rds » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:58 pm

I'm hoping to start a sewing class next week and have to have my own machine for it. I bought a used (old) Singer 5805 which seems to work mechanically fine, but I have noticed the spool pin and spool cap have snapped off it. Can I still use the machine? It looks like I could replace the spool pin fairly easily with some dowelling, but I don't know how I would replace the cap.
Any thoughts much appreciated!

You can order the spool pin & cap from sew4less.com.

Spool Pin: #445349-903 ($2.00)
Spool Cap: #511113-456 ($4.00)

If you need to use the machine before you can obtain a replacement spool pin, you can pick up a thread stand that sits behind the machine. Available at fabric stores, quilt shops, and some department stores. The spool of thread sits on the stand and the thread routes through a guide that lifts it above the height of the machine.
